Goalscorer Steven Thompson admitted the Clarets' players were "gutted" after losing to Wolves but insists that no-one in the dressing room is giving up the fight to stay in the Premier League.

Thompson's first goal of the season and the impact of fellow substitute Robbie Blake almost rescued a point for Burnley after fellow strugglers Wolves had led by two goals at Turf Moor.

But after Blake had hit the woodwork and the Clarets had a strong penalty claim for handball against Christophe Berra turned down, Brian Laws' battlers lost 2-1 to stay in the bottom three.

A third successive home game without a win did little to improve the mood of the supporters but Thompson insisted that the players are sharing their pain and still believe they can beat the drop.

"We're not having a party, put it that way. Supporters feel disappointed and rightly so, but they have to realise we feel equally if not more disappointed, because we are the ones out on the pitch," said the Scot.

"The players are gutted. It seems we have doing it the whole season but we will just have to dust ourselves down and get on with it.

"I think we do have the character within the changing room to get out of it.

"Today was a big game but by no means was it the be-all and end-all game. There are eight games left.

"We are certainly not going to give up until it's mathematically impossible and I think there are games there that we can win.

"I think we can get out of it and we need the supporters' backing."

Thompson added: "We do believe we are good enough. We showed today we are good enough to win the game and we showed in the Stoke game in the second half we were good enough to win that game.

"There have been countless games when we have been good enough to win. We just haven't quite managed to do it and hopefully it will turn for us.

"The boys are still believing we can do it. Everybody is disappointed and it does get hard picking yourself up every single week.

"But we will do it and work hard next week and on to the next game, which is a winnable game at Wigan."

Thompson was delighted to post the milestone of a first Premier League goal as he proved again, following his first start in mid-week, that he has plenty to offer in the closing weeks of the campaign.

And he felt that his 73rd-minute header should not have been in vain as the Clarets strove to overcome the double set-back of a gifted goal to Matt Jarvis and a heavily deflected strike from Adlene Guedioura.

"It was a big game and everybody is bitterly disappointed not to have got something out the match, which I think overall we deserved," Thompson added.

"For the last 40 minutes we showed a lot of character to come back from 2-0 down and get the goal and I feel we should have taken something from the game."
