Defender David Edgar joined the Clarets from Newcastle United on a four-year deal in July 2009 but endured a frustrating first season at Turf Moor.
A transfer tribunal instructed Burnley to pay an initial fee of £300,000 for the Canada under-20 international.
A further six-figure fee will be payable based on appearances with Newcastle also entitled to a sell-on fee for any future move.
However, Edgar made just six appearances in his first season as a Claret, although one of his two Premier League starts was an impressive league debut at Manchester United.
He was then loaned out to Swansea City where he scored once in five games in the final few weeks of the season as the Swans just missed out on a place in the Championship play-offs.
Renowned for being a good leader, Edgar, 22, made seven starts at St James' Park last season, scoring one goal as the Magpies were relegated to the Championship.
The right-sided defender had previously come through the youth system at Newcastle, where his father Eddie had enjoyed a brief spell as a goalkeeper before moving to Canada.
Edgar, an impressive ice hockey player in his youth, went on to make 23 first-team appearances for the Magpies, including 11 starts in the Premier League, and marked his home debut with an equalising goal against Manchester United on New Year's Day, 2007.
